Removing veneers from railway rolling stock: metal and veneer

The Challenge: Delicate Surfaces in Rolling Stock
The rolling stock maintenance and modernization department must remove identification markings, labels, and decals from surfaces of varying sensitivity: painted steel, protective coatings, and delicate interior veneer panels. Each of these surfaces reacts differently to mechanical stress and temperature, so one method must work safely on all of them.
Traditional methods fail in such applications:
- Scrapers scratch and gouge both paint and veneer – the damage is irreversible.
- Chemicals stain coatings, can penetrate wood, and compromise its structure.
- Rubber abrasive wheels (eraser wheels) overheat veneer and coatings due to friction, causing discoloration and blistering.
In rolling stock, veneered panels and protective coatings are expensive and difficult-to-repair components, so the risk of damage is particularly significant here.
Testing on Metal and Veneer
The Vinyl Zapper® was tested on both metal surfaces and veneer. Controlled rotary processing – without heat and without chemicals – allows for precise decal removal, without the risk of overheating characteristic of thermal methods and without the risk of solvents penetrating the wood.
- Effective removal of decals from metal and wood surfaces.
- No scratches or gouges on painted steel.
- No damage to veneer or protective coatings.
- Precise, controlled operator work – easy guidance along edges and details.
- Smooth, vibration-free operation, important for delicate interior panels.
Result
In the described case, over 60% reduction in working time for marking removal was observed compared to manual methods, while fully preserving the integrity of sensitive surfaces. The test confirmed the suitability of Vinyl Zapper® for the renovation of high-value rolling stock, where surface damage means costly repair or panel replacement.
Significance for Rolling Stock Renovation
In Polish and Baltic rolling stock, a method that removes decals without damaging veneer and coatings limits the risk of expensive repairs and shortens modernization time. Controlled rotary processing works where scrapers, chemicals, and abrasive wheels pose a risk of damage – and at the same time remains effective on hard, painted steel.
One tool handling both metal and wood simplifies the process and reduces the number of methods used, which translates into repeatability and lower risk of error.
How it Works on Different Surfaces
On painted steel, the tool works efficiently, removing film and adhesive without damaging the coating. On veneer and interior panels, the operator guides it with less pressure and full control, thanks to smooth, vibration-free operation. The same operating principle on both types of surfaces means that the technician does not have to change methods or tools during the modernization of a single wagon.
The absence of heat and chemicals eliminates risks typical of interior renovations: discoloration, blistering, and stains on wood. This is important for elements that are difficult to reproduce, and replacing a veneered panel is costly and time-consuming.
