Removing veneers in freezing temperatures (−5°C) without damaging the paint

 ·  By MontiPower Poland & Baltics  ·  2 min read

Short answer

Why frost makes decal removal difficult

At -5°C, polyvinyl film becomes brittle, and the adhesive hardens and loses elasticity. Standard methods fail: the film breaks into small fragments instead of coming off in one piece, and the hard adhesive is difficult to separate from the paintwork. The operator loses time making multiple passes over the same surface.

Heat guns and heating elements are impractical in such conditions outdoors. Heat escapes faster than it heats the coating, so warming the film to working temperature takes a long time and is uneven. Local overheating, in turn, risks softening or discoloration of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) paintwork. As a result, work is moved to a heated workshop, which blocks bays and extends vehicle turnaround times.

In Poland and the Baltic States, where sub-zero temperatures persist for a significant part of the year, this directly translates into downtime and increased fleet maintenance costs.

Solution: controlled rotary processing without heat

Vinyl Zapper® removes decals and stickers using controlled rotary processing — without heat or chemicals. Because the method does not rely on heating the film, the tool works reliably even in freezing temperatures, when thermal methods become ineffective. The working element removes the film along with the adhesive, leaving the surface ready for further processing.

  • No damage to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) paintwork — the tool removes the film and adhesive without affecting the coating.
  • No adhesive smearing or surface scratches.
  • Smooth, vibration-free operation — less operator fatigue during longer shifts and better control over the tool.
  • Repeatable results regardless of ambient temperature — the same effect in summer and winter.
  • Work possible outdoors, without the need to move the vehicle to a heated workshop.

Results in winter conditions

In the described case of decal removal at -5°C, more than a 60% reduction in working time was observed compared to thermal and manual methods. The reduction in the time of a single operation directly translates into workshop throughput in the winter season — a period when heat-based methods are least efficient.

Applications

  • Year-round fleet maintenance in Poland and the Baltic countries, even at sub-zero temperatures.
  • Preparing vehicles for lease return regardless of the season.
  • Public transport fleets (buses, municipal vehicles) operated on a continuous cycle.
  • Renovation, repainting, and sign changes carried out outdoors.

Summary

Decal removal in low temperatures does not have to mean downtime or risk to the paintwork. Controlled rotary processing provides predictable, safe results all year round, regardless of weather and the availability of a heated workshop.

How this changes work organization

The no-heat, no-chemical method simplifies the workstation: you don't need heat guns, solvents, or their disposal, and preparation for work amounts to simply connecting the tool. There's also no need to protect adjacent elements from solvent or excessive heat. Limiting the number of factors affecting the result translates into repeatability — any trained operator achieves the same effect.

In winter practice, this means the vehicle can be serviced outdoors or in an unheated workshop, without waiting for the surface to heat up. For fleets billed by turnaround time, this is a concrete saving in the most challenging season.
