ISO 12944 and degree Sa2 ½ without sandblasting

 ·  By MontiPower Poland & Baltics  ·  1 min read

Short answer

What ISO 12944 requires in terms of surface preparation

ISO 12944 (Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems) is the primary reference for coating work in Poland and the Baltic countries. In terms of surface preparation, it refers to ISO 8501-1 and for most systems requires a cleanliness of Sa2 ½ at the time of coating application, together with a roughness profile appropriate for the specific paint system.

Traditionally, this meant abrasive blasting: a pressure pot, compressor, containment, abrasive disposal, and a skilled blasting crew. On an active site, this usually also entailed the necessity of shutting down operations.

Mechanical route to a comparable result

Bristle Blaster® works differently: rotating wire bristles strike the surface with kinetic energy comparable to that of abrasive media, then immediately retract, removing corrosion and creating a roughness profile of 65–85 µm Rz in a single cold pass. Independent laboratory tests confirm surface cleanliness comparable to ISO 8501-1 Sa2 ½ and Sa3. Test reports are in the same class of documentation used to qualify blasting contractors.

What to show the coating inspector

Three documents cover most compliance conversations: comparative test reports per ISO 8501-1, a method of verifying the roughness profile (ISO 8503 comparator or replication tape per ASTM D4417 Method C), and—for explosive atmospheres—ATEX compliance documentation for pneumatic drive units. All are available for download on our resources page, and our team will prepare a compliance package for a specific coating system.

Where it matters in Poland and the Baltic region

Maintenance shutdowns in refineries in Płock and Gdańsk; ongoing maintenance in terminals and industrial facilities; tank and pipeline programs where the construction of blasting enclosures is impractical. In each of these cases, the question is the same: can the required grade be achieved without setting up a blasting station? Thanks to documented, third-party verified results and a European warehouse, the answer is: yes, in a comparable manner.
